Some know, and some don’t. I’m not from P.E.I. but it is my home now. Or rather, I am trying to make it home. I came here in 2009 full of optimism for a new chapter in my life with my now ex-husband and his family. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as planned so I am trying once again to make Prince Edward Island home, only this time I’m on my own. Don’t get me wrong, I love it here for so many reasons, but as a “come from away” it has had it’s challenges I never expected to experience.
I’ve had some ups and downs, some good luck and bad. Some days I am grateful to have a good job, a home, wonderful kids, and some days are overwhelmingly sad to be away from my family, friends, and sense of belonging that I desperately miss.
I discovered this article and campaign by the Province to repatriate Islanders who’ve moved away the exact same day I was attempting to convince someone to move back here. There’s even a contest! Crazy timing right? Ya, I thought so too!
So how do I convince someone to move back here when I struggle to convince myself to stay and what am I going to do about it? My first thought was to just randomly send reasons to move back here. (Other than myself being here…obviously!) But let’s be reasonable, that’s not enough. 🙂
This is what I AM going to do about it. I’m going to list 100 reasons in 100 days. I’m going to look for something good in every day, from the mundane routines to the spectacular island features that make P.E.I the Mighty Island it is trying to be. Starting today!
Is there something I’m missing? Send me your experiences, your ideas and the things you love most about Prince Edward Island and I will try as many of them as I can. Help me convince my friend to come “home”. Convince me this can be my home too.
P.S. I will only be using my own images throughout.
- Covehead Beach – North Shore, P.E.I.
Soft white sand between your toes, ocean that stretches forever and blends with the sky. Salt air smell that can’t be bottled or infused in to a plastic tree for your car.

- Victoria Park, Charlottetown
Any time you want, (assuming you work in Charlottetown) you can simply walk out your office door and take a stroll along the boardwalk. You can see and smell the ocean and then go back to work.

Most entertaining street meat I’ve ever had. Read about him here.

- It’s a beautiful place to get married.
I had the honour of photographing a wedding this weekend. It was a fun and relaxed day (at least for me) and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The day was as beautiful as the bride. You could feel the love all around you. It did make me long for the same sense of community though…

There is world class golfing at almost every corner. How often do you get this view from the T ? My son and I went to the driving range after work. SO easy!

Small city, more space, means bigger yards = Dog Life

- Visitors – Live here, and the visitors will come.
If you live in vacation land, people will visit you on vacation. Here is my friend and I at Anne of Green Gables (not that you can tell with a blasted out phone picture, sorry Anne with an E) enjoying the day playing “tourist at home” even in a monsoon.

- East Coast is easy to explore from PEI
Okay Okay it’s a stretch. I wasn’t actually IN PEI this weekend, BUT it was a super easy 24 hour trip to visit friends and enjoy a wine tour in NS from here. And we found this little ditty in the middle of a vineyard. How fun!

- Less light pollution
Even in the city, you can see stars. You can get a sense of how small we are in the universe and that the distance across the country is really just a blip . Can you feel the same in a big city?

It’s Taco Tuesday. Could have gone for tacos but nachos are a close second and a first choice at Brackish along with a nice view of the harbour and fenced in yard with activities for kids so they don’t get bored, making dinner-out with kids a pleasant possibility.

- Clean ocean air
Air pollution is minimal here. We get a fresh ocean breeze most days that smells like salt and freedom. Pollen on the other hand…

- Old Home Week
Sure it’s smaller than other bigger cities, but isn’t that what makes it that much better? The smell of cows, horses, popcorn, and cotton candy all mixed together with the sound of the horse races and rides with kids screaming.

- Today was a washout
Soo I missed a day. With the heavy rains, the day wasn’t a day to be excited about with a failed sump pump, torrential rains, and flooding in the basement. Being close to the ocean is wonderful, having some of that ocean in my house, not so much.

- It’s safer
Haven’t locked my door since I moved here in 2009 except that one time I left my keys at a friends house and locked myself out. That ONE day!

- Have I mentioned safety?
I can take the dog for a walk down a long and quiet road after dark without a care in the world besides maybe mosquitoes. No need for those F****rs…
